This year we spent two weeks in Crete. Four years ago we could only explore Gouves and its surroundings as Dora was not at all keen on sitting in a car, and we also visited Santorini then. But now it was time for something more serious: to explore far-away parts of the island, which gives you so much more than the crowded northern coast. |
For the first week of our stay we chose Falassarna on the west end of the island. The spacious bay is surrounded by spectacular mountains, and the sea is often made rough by crushing waves. We arrived at 1 am after three hours in the car from Iraklion Airport. We got this amazing view in the morning right from our balcony! |
We also had a beautiful garden next to our balcony where we could take really nice pictures of the whole bay. You are a little mistaken here though, as you cannot see the actual size of the beach which is in a wide open hole! |
The huge terrace above the beach - which hinders you from seeing the real size of the sand strip - is covered by olive plantations and greenhouses, which you probably find striking at first. But if you think about it for a moment, you can be really grateful for it as there are no huge hotel complexes, and the area provides a normal living for the people here. |
We slept a little late but then we immediately went to the beach of course. It was a fantastic experience for Dora as she only saw waves as high as these four years before. Luckily, she was not at all afraid of them and walked into the foaming waves in the most natural way. |
We had the biggest waves this day, due to the strong west wind that was blowing all day. But this is the best wind direction here as at least it leaves the sand in its place. The problem comes when the wind suddenly gets stronger or changes direction, as all your body and things get bombarded by hard sand. |
On of the first things Dora tried was jumping in the waves. She just remembered doing this last year on Tsampika, Rhodes, but of course now it was even more enjoyable as the waves were a lot bigger here. |
She also enjoyed the fantastic scenery and gladly posed for the camera. I didn't find it difficult either to take pictures of these truly unforgettable moments! |
She adored the way the waves covered her body, and there was just no stopping as there was always another wave to come! |
She awaited each and every wave with great excitement, just like a real playmate. She just never got bored with it! |
It was time for the doggy belt too. She was really brave in it! |
She used it as a wave riding tool, first at the edge of the water. |
What a pleasure to play with the sand here! |

You just never get tired here! |
